The
heart of the city is Rynek Glowny, a great plaza reminiscent of Brussels' Grand Place or
Venice's Piazza
San Marco. On any given day, a visitor will find Krakovians out for a
stroll, itinerant musicians,
university students and small groups of tourists from the hinterlands.
In background -- St. Mary Church
(Mariacki Church) - towers above you. In 1241 the Tatars were attacking the city. A guard was sounding the
alarm, when an arrow pierced his throat. Today, when the clock bell strikes the hour,. the hub-bub of voices quietens,
and the trumpet call that ends on a broken note - the Heynal - is played from a balcony on the higher of the
two towers each day at noon.
