International Youth Meeting Center in Oswiecim/Auschwitz, Poland

The International Youth Meeting Center in Oswiecim is an educational center, which was organized and brought to life by the German organization "Action Reconciliation Service for Peace" (ARSP) and the City of Oswiecim.

IYMC was founded in 1986 with the intense persuasion that a knowledge and understanding of history will help us to create a better future. The idea of an International Youth Meeting Center in Oswiecim/Auschwitz was born within the organization of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) after the signing of the "Warsaw Contract" between the West German and the Polish governments in 1970. 

It's secretary, the poet Volker von Törne, dreamt of a house, under whose roof young people from different countries find a place to deal with the difficult heritage of Auschwitz and can get to know each other, their way of life and style of thinking. 

A place was to be created for discussions and dialogue, a place where history can be critically assessed. Therefore one central and continuously growing aspect of our work is the realization of international programs. German-Polish partnerships utilize opportunities to organize programs in the IYMC lasting several days, the IYMC itself organizes free open seminars, e.g. theatre, art, photography and journalism workshops as well as youth exchange programs and seminars with thematic priority, such as architecture and town planning, medicine in Auschwitz etc. Additionally further educational seminars for teachers and counselors take place several times a year.
